![]() ![]() ![]() System Shock 2's deep gameplay mechanics, combined with its smartly designed maps, interesting plot and great atmosphere, turned it into an instant classic. That way of thinking made possible deep games such as System Shock 1, its sequel, or Thief: the Dark Project. Looking Glass Studios took players seriously, in the sense that they assumed they weren't a bunch of idiots, as most of modern videogames developers do assume. It's a shame that Looking Glass Studios no longer exists. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of first person shooting and exploration, while a role-playing system allows the player to develop unique abilities and traits.I've been playing System Shock 1 and System Shock 2 for years, and since the second one was recently released on Steam, I thought that it was a good idea to make an extensive guide for this great game, which is in fact one of my favourites, along with the first one. The player assumes the role of a lone soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. The game takes place on board an adrift starship in a cyberpunk vision of 2114. In 2007, Irrational released a self-proclaimed spiritual successor to the System Shock series, entitled BioShock, to critical acclaim and strong sales. The game has since become a cult classic, and is widely regarded by critics as one of the greatest ever made. System Shock 2 received positive reviews when released, but failed to meet commercial sales expectations. System Shock 2 was released on Augby Electronic Arts. After Electronic Arts, who owned the Shock franchise rights, signed on to publish, the game became a sequel. ![]() It was originally co-developed as a separate game by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios.
